Carlos Alonso is a high-integrity global business leader with a strong track record of performance and true value creation in the healthcare, industrial equipment, engineering andchemical industries, and of driving impactful engagement with commercial partners, trade unions, patient and trade associations globally.An integrator with strengths balanced across strategy, execution and organizational development, he is skilled at managing companies and business units of large multinationals indiversebusinessconditions, economic environments and cultural settings, building/developing high-performing teams, and leading continuousimprovement and business transformation.Carlos’s expertise in mergers and acquisitions, turnarounds, and ability to work effectively across geographies informs all his work.
His Board experience includes serving now as Chairman of the Board of Direct Healthcare Group, a medical equipment company based in the UK, and having served as executive board member of the Esaote Group, a medical imaging leader based in Italy, frequent board interactions at Baxter, Esteve Group and Hillrom, and his current service on the Advisory Board of the Health Sector Management & Policy of the University of Miami’s Business School and until recently in the Board of Directors of Make-a-Wish Illinois. Carlos has served as SVP and President, International, Hill-Rom Holdings Inc. from 2015 until 2019. During his tenure, he created the International Division ($1Bn in business operations) by implementing a merger with Trumpf Medical (Germany) and Welch-Allyn(USA); turned around its sales growth to positive numbers; revitalized his leadership team; and defined and started implementing a transformational plan that simplifies the go-to-marketand business operational model.
Before joining Hill-Rom, Carlos served as the president and CEO of the Esaote Group, a medical imaging leader based in Genova, Italy (2013 –2015). In this capacity, he created and obtained Board concurrence to restructure and transition the firm froma group of companies to a multinational company to fuel accelerated, sustainable growth; improved internal cooperation and communication by enhancing leaders’ agility and accountability; expedited time to market; and decreased R&D costs while improving Esaote’s standing in the industry by redefining its R&D strategy and product pipeline.
Prior to joining Esaote, Carlos served as the CEO of Esteve Pharmaceuticals based in Barcelona, Spain, a $900M global pharmaceutical and chemical company, where he improved commercial effectiveness by restructuring the organization and increased performance and efficiencies of the R&D department by leading improvement of operating mechanisms. Earlier, Carlos held leadership roles of increasing responsibility with Baxter International Inc. (1996 – 2011), including serving as corporate vice president and global president of the Renal Division, and president of the Latin America and Canada Region, additionally to different country general manager roles in Canada, Brazil and Argentina During his Baxter tenure, he worked and lived in the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, and Germany, working comfortably in more than 3 languages.
He earned a master’s degree in management (PDD) from the IESE Business School, Universidad de Navarra, in Barcelona, Spain, an M.Sc. in Process Engineering from the Instituto Químico de Sarrià (IQS), also in Barcelona, and a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the Universidade Federal do Paraná, in Curitiba, Brazil.
Carlos is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English, conversational in Catalan, Italian and German, and enjoys trekking, traveling, music, reading, history and politics, and resides in the greater Miami area.
